Producers encouraged to attend BEEF 2020

The South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC) is encouraging folks to sign up for the BEEF 2020 Conference on Jan. 7-9 in Brookings, SD. SDBIC is a sponsor of BEEF 2020, which is designed to provide a handson, educational opportunity to learn more about the production and marketing of beef.

“BEEF 2020 provides insight into factors that affect carcass value, beef quality and palatability. It is a fun, hands-on program that educates anyone interested in the beef industry. Anyone is welcome to register for the program. The program is designed to be useful to anyone involved with the beef industry and welcomes ranchers, retailers and consumers,” said Keith Underwood, South Dakota State University (SDSU) Assistant Professor and Extension Meat Specialist.

BEEF 2020 will be held at the SDSU Animal Science Complex located at 1029 North Campus Drive in Brookings. The event begins at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 7 and ends at noon on Jan. 9.

“BEEF 2020 addresses topics such as feeding and management strategies to improve carcass quality; genetic prediction of carcass merit; marketing the calf crop; and factors that affect eating quality,” explained Underwood. “BEEF 2020 also provides a hands-on carcass fabrication and value determination, live cattle evaluation, and sensory panel analysis of beef.”

The registration deadline is Dec. 31, 2013, and the fee is $75, which includes meals and all materials for the program. Registration is limited to the first 30 due to the intensive, hands-on nature of this program.

“Carcass value-based marketing systems have increased in the U.S. over the last decade,” added Underwood. “With the increase in cattle marketed using these systems, there is a growing need for educational programming targeted at the determination and management of carcass value.”
