During the 108th annual Arizona Cattle Growers’ Association (ACGA) joint convention over 300 attendees convened in Prescott to develop new policy, discuss issues and visit with new and old friends. Dr. Robert Milligan kicked off the opening session with a thought provoking message to “view change as opportunity.” That evening the Arizona Cattle Industry Auction benefitting ACGA, Arizona State Cowbelles and Arizona Cattle Industry Foundation raised over $23,000 collectively.

At the annual awards luncheon, the Top Wrangler award went to Jim Loughead. An extremely deserving recipient, Loughead has been active in Arizona agriculture his whole life. Most recently he has served on numerous committees for ACGA, Arizona National Livestock Show and the Arizona Natural Resource Conservation Districts State Association. He is dedicated to the profitability and growth of the beef industry and is a truly a dedicated servant to advancing it. When awarded Jim stated, “I enjoy what I’m doing so much, I don’t need an award to do it.”

Finally, the highest award annually bestowed, Cattleman of the Year, was awarded to Senator Steve Pierce.

His family has ranched and raised cattle in Arizona for over 100 years. He has served in leadership roles for the Yavapai County Cattle Growers’, Arizona Beef Council, ACGA and the U.S. Meat Export Federation. He publicly states, “I have been a rancher for over five decades. I learned a long time ago the value of hard work, to not be afraid to get your hands dirty and how to spot manure!” A true servant to rural Arizona and its cattle community, we are fortunate to have rancher Steve Pierce as the current President of the Arizona State Senate.

The final evening commenced with an outstanding Steak Fry and Dance at the beautiful Las Vegas Ranch north of Prescott. The final day convened with resolutions from each committee being brought forth to the membership luncheon. A report from President, Andy Groseta, and Executive Vice President, Patrick Bray, illustrated the many ways that ACGA has been representing members over the past year from Catastrophic Wildfire legislation, litigating with county assessors over unfair taxation, to commenting on rules on the federal level.

The 2013 convention will be July 25-27, 2013 at Wild Horse Pass Resort & Casino in Chandler, Arizona. — WLJ
