Dunkins named BBU Member of the Year
Jim and Anita Dunkin, 4D Beefmasters, Paige, TX, were honored as the 2009 Member of the Year at the Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) Annual Convention Oct. 22-24 in San Antonio, TX.
The Dunkins purchased their first Beefmasters in the late 1980s and joined BBU in 1992. Their operation has expanded over the years to include artificial insemination and performance breeding. They currently market an elite set of donor cows known as the “Lone Star Ladies” and participate in BBU’s Whole Herd Reporting Program.
“The Dunkin’s slogan, ‘Small Farm, Big Performance,’ sums up their program well,” said Dr. Tommy Perkins, Ph.D., BBU executive vice president. “They cull very hard and only keep and sell the very best cattle.”
The duo consigns cattle to numerous Beefmaster sales and they have earned top honors with their genetics over the years at various futurities and graded events. Their children, Chad and Dawn, were active members of the Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association during their youth.
The Dunkins generously give of their time as volunteers for BBU. Anita is currently vice president of Beefmaster Breeders Cattlewomen and Jim has served on several BBU committees and is currently serving on the Live Oak Beefmaster Breeders Association board of directors. He has also worked diligently developing Web sites for several BBU satellite groups. The two have coordinated the Pride of the Herds display at the BBU Convention the last two years. The display showcases some of the top genetics in the breed and is a great advertising opportunity for breeders of all sizes.
