Winnemucca Ranch Hand Rodeo weekend adds bull sale

The Humboldt County Agricultural District No. 3 has announced the addition of an Invitational Bull Sale to the 2010 Winnemucca Ranch Hand Rodeo weekend, which is scheduled for Wednesday, March 3, through Sunday, March 7, 2010. Ag Director Kim Petersen said the addition will complete the weekend that includes the hugely popular Ranch Hand Rodeo, Cow Dog Trials, a Stock Horse Competition, Western Trade Show, and Kids’ Dummy Roping and Stick Horse Barrels. A Ranch, Rope and Performance Horse Sale also gathers horse sellers and buyers to Winnemucca from all over the western United States for what many have called the weekend’s stand-out event.

Humboldt County residents Bob and Susan Hoenck will coordinate the sale in conjunction with the Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority and Ag District 3. Susan Hoenck said the Ranch Hand Rodeo weekend comes at a perfect time for area ranchers.

“Spring is the time to buy and replace the bulls needed for the upcoming season in the cow herd,” she said, “so the timing of this Invitational Bull Sale will cut down on the amount of time and feed the cattlemen will have to provide for the replacement bulls.”

Hoenck continued, “The bull sale will provide a service for our local cattlemen and is the first stage of a service that we hope will catch on and grow.” The bulls will be exhibited in the Winnemucca Events Complex Covered Arena located behind the Winnemucca Event Center. The facility is well-suited for the firsttime event, said Hoenck, noting that it will provide a quieter venue for the animals with plenty of room for would-be buyers to view the sale offering.

The sale itself also will take place in the Covered Arena prior to the final performance of the Ranch Hand Rodeo on Sunday, March 7, 2010,beginning at 8:30 a.m. “We feel it is extremely important to bring in the best offering possible for the first sale and to continue to select top quality for years to come,” she said. “It’s always tough to make up ground, so we will shoot for the best.” The response so far from both consignors and buyers has been excellent. “They are excited,” said Hoenck, noting that Winnemucca is the right place and the Ranch Hand Rodeo weekend is the right time for a high quality sale. She added, “Everyone likes our area, likes our facility and wants to come to our town. They are looking forward to the Ranch Hand Rodeo and everything the whole event will have to offer.” Petersen said similar events throughout the West, such as the Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale and the Kla math

Falls Bull & Gelding Sale, provide a good benchmark for what Humboldt County hopes to achieve.

“Our goal is to continue to build the Ranch Hand Rodeo weekend into a destination event that not only provides some heated competition for rodeo participants, but that consignors and their families can look forward to for some fun vacation time.” Sale information is available by calling Michelle Urain at 775/623-5071, ext. 101, or by calling Bob and Susan Hoenck at 775/ 859-0238.
