Red Angus events planned for National Western Stock Show
In addition to the traditional Red Angus shows and sale at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO, Red Angus breeders will have the opportunity to participate in other breed-specific events.
Saturday, Jan. 10
Sarah “Sal” Forbes, Sheridan, WY, was honored at a reception to recognize her outstanding contributions to Red Angus and the entire beef industry. In November, the Red Angus breed founder’s portrait was hung in the prestigious Saddle & Sirloin Portrait Gallery in Louisville, KY. Forbes is the first woman to receive this honor.
Sunday, Jan. 11
Red Angus breeders will have the opportunity to map the breed’s competitive position within the industry during the Brain Trust 2009 “Blueprint for the Future” meeting. “As the road less traveled becomes a super highway, Red Angus strategies must widen the gap between ourselves and the competition,” said Red Angus Executive Secretary Greg Comstock.
Monday, Jan. 12
The “Herd In A Tank” auction is a unique opportunity to purchase a new Millennium semen tank including a “herd” of semen and embryos.
The “Herd In A Tank” package will sell as one unit at the Mile High Classic Sale scheduled for 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 12 in the sale arena in the Yards.
The tank, semen and embryos were donated and the auction proceeds will benefit the Junior Red Angus Stockgrowers Contest that takes place Jan. 10-12.
Contestants are between the ages of 10 and 18 and are judged on their project knowledge, care and handling of their animal, and showmanship. They will also show their animal, present a two-minute speech about their project, participate in learning activities, and attend the Red Angus Brain Trust meeting. The Overall Grand Champion will be awarded a $1,500 certificate toward the purchase of a registered Red Angus heifer.
