Premier horse sale will gather buyers in Winnemucca

Some of the West’s best work and show horses will be up for bid next February as part of Nevada’s favorite ranch hand weekend.

The Winnemucca Ranch Hand Rodeo weekend will celebrate its 20th year from Thursday, Feb. 26 through Sunday, March 1, 2009. Thirty teams will vie for honors Saturday and Sunday at the Ranch Hand Rodeo. The weekend also will feature a Stock Horse Competition, Cow Dog Trials, Western Trade Show and Kids’ Dummy Roping and Stick Horse Barrels.

The weekend’s high point, however, will be the Ranch, Rope and Performance Horse Sale. Horse sellers and buyers will gather to Winnemucca from all over the western U.S. and organizers say they are expecting another stand-out event.

In 2008, Gins Smoke, consigned by Ike Thomas and bought by Mervin Munsch, sold for $12,000. The Top 10 Sale Horse Average was $7,630 and the Top 20 Sale Horse Average was $6,055.

“In 2009, we are looking to top that in every way,” said Humboldt County Agricultural District 3 Director Kim Petersen, “both in terms of the quality of animals we present for the sale and our sale averages.”

Petersen said in addition to an excellent selection of sale horses, the sale will enjoy the talents of Rick Machado, the 1999 World Champion Auctioneer.

“We are so lucky to have Rick,” said Petersen. “Not only is he a total professional behind the microphone, but he is a horse professional as well, and that combination makes for a wonderful, well-executed event.”

The sale is open to any ranch, rope and performance horse under saddle 2 years and older as well as grade horses. Entries are limited to the first 60 horses. Petersen said committee members will be fair but firm as horses move from sifting to preview, catalog and sale. “This is a premier horse sale,” said Petersen. “All entries will be inspected for soundness, conformation, temperament and quality.”

Petersen added, “We will only feature the best horses in our catalog and sale.” Sifting will be held in the covered arena adjacent to the indoor Winnemucca Event Center beginning at 7 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27. Consignors will submit a recent short video of each sale horse to enable the committee to expedite their evaluations.

A riding preview of sale horses will follow at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Rope horses will preview out of the box, and cutting and working cow horses will demonstrate dry work. Additionally, horses will work a single cow during the sale in the sale ring. The Ranch, Rope and Performance Horse Sale will follow at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. “We are looking forward to a top-notch event,” said Petersen. “We have a beautiful indoor facility, plenty of campsites with electricity, and one of the West’s most successful ranch hand weekends.”

He continued, “We invite everyone to join us as we officially kick off the 2009 special event season.” Consignment forms for the Winnemucca Ranch, Rope and Performance Horse Sale are available at

Entry deadline for consignment is Friday, Jan. 30, limited to the first 60 entries. The sale catalog will be available after Feb. 1.
