WLJ's Sizzling Summer Cookout Competition
— Reader won Nolan Ryan’s BBQ cookbook with flank steak recipe
Congratulations to WLJ reader Julie Vigna, who sent in the winning recipe for this year’s Summer Sizzling Cookout competition! Her recipe for Barbecued Oriental Flank Steak was chosen as the winner. Julie received a copy of the “Nolan Ryan Beef and Barbecue Cookbook” for her winning entry. Watch WLJ’s pages and online for reader competitions in the future!
Barbecued Oriental Flank Steak
Flank steak (med-large)
1/4 cup soy sauce
1 tbsp. honey
2 tbsp. vinegar (rice vinegar is good)
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
3/4 cup salad oil
2 green onions, chopped
Pierce meat or score lightly with a fork. Combine all ingredients except beef and mix well to create the marinade. Place meat flat in a 9 x 12 glass baking dish then pour marinade over meat and turn once to coat both sides. Cover dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 24 hours, turning once after approximately 12 hours. Barbecue over hot coal 5-8 minutes per side depending on thickness of meat being careful not to overcook. Baste with marinade as needed. Once finished, slice thin across the grain and serve!
WLJ tried out Julie’s dish and it was excellent! The sweet of the honey mixed wonderfully with the salty/spicy of the gingered soy sauce base. Due to local availability, skirt steak had to be substituted for the requested flank steak.
