Early signs of heifer retention?

As of Jan. 1, 2013, cow/calf producers were retaining 5.36 million heifers for breeding, which was almost 2 percent more than a year ago. Whether those replacement heifers will translate to an increase in the cow herd by the end of this year, however, is uncertain, said Darrell Mark, Adjunct Professor of Economics at South Dakota State University.
