Laurie Gates; 1950-2017

Laurie Higgins Gates was born on Nov. 20, 1950 in El Paso, TX, and passed away on Jan. 29, 2017 in San Antonio, TX.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Gates; mother, Ann Higgins; and brother, Tommy Higgins; sons Barry Gates and Carroll Gates (Tyler); and grandsons Shiloh and Westley. She was preceded in death by grandson, Shane, in 2014.

She attended St. Clements and Gadsden High School where she graduated with honors in 1968. She was an FFA Sweetheart and also an accomplished horse woman competing in many three-day events in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Juarez, Mexico. She was also a past president of the West of the Pecos CattleWomen.

Gates graduated from New Mexico State University in December 1971 with a degree in Ag Biology. She and Richard married in the Episcopal Church in La Union, NM, on Jan. 29, 1972 and lived at the Espejo Ranch in Webb and Dimmit County, TX, for many years before moving to a new ranch in Marfa, TX, in 1989.

She spent her life helping Richard in the ranching business and serving her family, her community and her Lord. She and Richard were happily married for 45 years. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends. It was too soon.

Interment took place Feb. 8, 2017 at the Gates Family Cemetery West in Marfa. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to: Pancreatic Cancer Moon Shot MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210-4486, online at www.mdanderson.org/gifts, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
